A series of accidents occurred in Manitoba, Canada. As a result, 10 people died.
Reported AFP, Friday (6/16/2023), police confirmed there was a “mass casualty collision” near the town of Carberry, west of Winnipeg. Mounted police were already at the scene of the crime.
According to several media outlets, the accident involved a semi-trailer truck and a minivan intended specifically for transporting disabled people.
“My heart is broken by the news of the tragic accident near Carberry. My deepest condolences to everyone involved,” Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson tweeted.
He said flags at Manitoba’s provincial legislature were lowered to half-mast “in honor of those we have tragically lost.”
The highway where the collision occurred was closed in both directions. Authorities asked motorists to avoid the area.
Eyewitness Nirmesh Vadera said many emergency vehicles and two helicopters were at the accident site.
“It’s really surreal to see the scale of (the accident), because I’ve never seen this kind of fire in any vehicle,” Vadera told AFP by telephone. He added that there was a lot of smoke around the scene.
He said a tractor-trailer was lying on its side along the road, while a smaller vehicle was on fire.
