Women’s World Cup 2023 results: Nigeria 0-0 Canada

Football News: Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie helped Nigeria to a precious 0-0 draw against Olympic champions Canada in their Women’s World Cup opener on Friday 7/21.

Christine Sinclair was knocked down in the box by Francisca Ordega, a penalty awarded by VAR.

Nnadozie saved a 50th-minute penalty at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, saving Sinclair’s cross to his left. The Canadian captain failed to become the first player to consistently score in six editions of the Women’s World Cup.

Both teams have collected one point each, edging Group B leaders Australia by two points after the hosts’ 1-0 victory over Ireland on Thursday (20/07).

Both teams had their chances in this game but Sinclair, who was substituted in the 70th minute, was perhaps the most frustrated. He missed a good chance when he fired wide in the ninth minute.

Another Canadian opportunity presented itself when substitute Evelyne Viens should have headed for the penalty area, but flew straight into Nnadozie’s arms.

Nigeria were almost impenetrable by Canada in the second half, they defended desperately to hold Canada until the end of the match.

After the final whistle, Nnadozie knelt down and clenched his fists in celebration.

Nigeria’s joy was not well matched after midfielder Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card in stoppage time. He will miss the next game against Australia.

Canada dominated possession but couldn’t capitalize on their dominance to score.
