Morocco took a 2-1 lead over Canada in the first round of Group F World Cup 2022 at Al Thumama Stadium, Doha, Qatar on Thursday (1/12).

Canada, who had already been eliminated, tried to play loose and took the initiative to attack from the first minutes. However, a blunder by goalkeeper Milan Borjan in the fourth minute ended in disaster.

Borjan, who was under pressure from the opposing players, instead pushed the ball towards Hakim Ziyech, who was standing not far from outside the penalty area. Without being direct, Ziyech immediately passed the ball past Borjan.

Winning a goal makes Morocco even more excited. The reason for this is that the Atlas Lions team needs a win to ensure they qualify for the last 16.

In the 24th minute, Morocco managed to double the score to 2-0 thanks to Youssef En-Nesyri who managed the through pass from Achraf Hakimi.

En-Nesyri, who ran between two Canadian defenders, managed to reach a through ball that ended with a low, hard kick into the right corner of the net.

However, Canada was also able to provide resistance and managed to reduce the position in the 40th minute. The goal came from an error by Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd.

Instead of sweeping the cross, Aguerd’s right foot instead twirled the ball into his own net. Position changed to 1-2.

Morocco almost opened the gap in added time thanks to En-Nesyri’s volley in the chaos of the penalty area. However, the goal was disallowed as previously the Moroccan players were offside.

The 2-1 score to Morocco’s advantage lasted until half-time. If they win, Morocco will qualify for the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
