7 Countries That Don’t Have Independence Day

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Indonesia has just celebrated a day independence the 78th year on August 17, 2023.

Independence is celebrated as a form of country free from colonialism by other countries.

As known, Indonesia was colonized by two different countries, namely the Netherlands and Japan.

But did you know that there are several countries that do not have Independence Day?

Here is a list of countries that do not have an Independence Day

1. Nepalese

Nepal has never been colonized by any country even though it is a small country. It has always been a sovereign state and served as a buffer between Imperial China and British India in the past. Therefore, do not celebrate Independence Day in any form. Nepal is also one of the oldest countries in South Asia.

2. Thai

Thailand never celebrates Independence Day because it has never fought for its freedom from foreign rulers. In 2014,

Thailand has started celebrating December 5 as a national holiday as it is the king’s birthday. Unless a new king takes the crown in Thailand, King Phumiphon’s birthday will be considered Thailand’s national holiday.

3. China

The Chinese were never completely colonized and ruled by kings. After the Chinese Revolution of 1949, Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It celebrates National Day and not Independence Day.

The Chinese Communist Party won the Chinese Civil War, which resulted in the Kuomintang’s withdrawal to Taiwan and the Chinese Communist Revolution. It was then that the People’s Republic of China replaced the Republic of China.

4. Canada

Canadians don’t celebrate Independence Day, but on July 1, they celebrate the Confederate’s birthday. Today marks the day the British North America Act (BNAA) was signed in 1867.

This act created the Dominion of Canada, only certain parts of the country were included, and Indigenous peoples had no say in the decisions.

However, the AANB means that the Dominion of Canada is a self-governing entity and the state is free from outright oppression.

Under the BNA Act, the part of the country called Canada was no longer under British control. Instead, the new dominion could form a parliament and make its own laws with responsibilities to finance and defend itself.

5. Denmark

Denmark is one of the few countries in the world that does not celebrate Independence Day and instead celebrates Constitution Day on June 5.

This day marks the anniversary of the coming to power of their constitution. Denmark’s history is full of Viking expeditions and their raids around the world.

Therefore, the Viking kingdoms fought among themselves for power, which is why there was never a major attempt to seize Denmark by a foreign power.

6.France

Although France celebrated its independence from the oppressive monarchy, the French Revolution, no foreign nation had ever enslaved and then liberated France. France is therefore one of the countries without Independence Day.

7. Russia

Russia is considered as a continent that covered most of Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. But after the disintegration of the Soviet Union into many countries, Russia became a separate country. But it was not colonized by any country.
