Bayern Munich rest Canadian national team star for 2022 World Cup

There is a muscle tear in Davies’ leg and there are fears he will miss the World Cup.

Alphonso Davies was substituted in Bayern Munich’s 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin at the weekend, leading to fears he could be injured for the upcoming 2022 World Cup.

Bayern have issued a new statement which allays the concerns of Canadian national team fans. They confirmed Davies was injured, but his recovery could be quick.

Bayern’s official website said Davies had a ‘tearing muscle fiber in his hamstrings’. They made it clear that the full-back would miss the next two games but made it clear that Davies’ participation in Qatar would not be jeopardized.

It will be Canada’s first appearance at the World Cup after a 36-year absence, having last reached the competition in 1986.

Granted, Davies himself missed a few qualifying periods, after a mild myocarditis issue, but he’s clearly expected to play a major role for the Canucks in the tournament.

He cannot play this midweek against Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena, then in Gelsenkirchen against Schalke 04, Saturday (12/12). Bayern also gave Davies a break to recover during the World Cup.

Canada will kick off the 2022 World Cup on November 23 against Belgium in Group F, which also includes Morocco and Croatia.
