Mayor Toronto, Canada, John Tory (68) has resigned from his post. Tory quit after admitting to having an extramarital affair with a staff member in his office.
“During the pandemic, I developed a relationship with an employee in my office in a way that was not up to the standards I have as mayor and head of household,” Tory told reporters. at a press conference at City Hall. Torontoas reported by AFP, Saturday (02/11/2023).
Tory resigned Friday night (10/1) local time. Tory said he would buy time for the mistake he made.
“As a result, I have decided to step down as mayor so that I can take time to reflect on my mistakes and do the work of rebuilding my family’s trust,” he said.
Tory resigned an hour later Toronto Star released reports about her relationship over the months.
Tory said the relationship was an “error in judgement”. He also apologized to the public, his colleagues, his wife and his family.
He said the relationship “ended by mutual consent earlier this year” and that he informed the city’s ethics officers.
Tory’s resignation comes less than four months after he was re-elected to a third term.
