β€œIn 1989, Juliette Powell became the first and last black woman to win Miss Universe Canada. That was 30 years ago,” Nova Stevens said in an interview with Fashion Magazine before the competition.

The fact that Canada has not had another winner of African descent in the past three decades is what ultimately motivated Nova to participate in the event. According to him, all women have the same chances of winning, regardless of their race or origin.

“I can't accept this situation. I'm sure it's not a problem if they can't afford it. Canada is a land of immigration and this diversity is what makes us very beautiful” , declared this model who is also an activist.

For Nova Stevens, winning Miss Universe Canada 2020 is not something easy to achieve. He had to experience two failures after participating in the same event in 2014 and 2018.

Having given up trying again, Nova became motivated again after watching Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa was crowned Miss Universe 2019.

Feeling that he has the same physique, he considers Zozibini a reflection of himself. “When you see yourself in others, you are inspired to show the best version of yourself. She inspired me. I told myself that if she can win Miss Universe because Miss Universe can see her, then Canada Maybe he can see me too,” he said.
