Canada fires medical scientist, leaks confidential information to China

Canada | EGINDO.co – The Canadian government has fired two medical scientists for leaking classified information to China. Canada fired the scientist who worked in the infectious disease laboratory because he was found to have provided confidential information to China in 2021.

Citing what was reported by a local Canadian newspaper, Globe and Mail, Wednesday (2/28/2024), reported that the two people were a married couple. The local newspaper wrote that the two doctor scientists were fired because they could threaten Canada's economic security.

More local newspapers Globe and Mail reported that the results of the Canadian Security Intelligence Agency's investigation concluded that the two men deliberately transferred knowledge and scientific materials to China. The two perpetrators were Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng. They were removed from the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg in 2019 and their security clearances were revoked. In 2021, both were officially fired.

Meanwhile, Canadian Health Minister Mark Holland condemned the action, calling it an unacceptable security breach. He admitted that the incident did not pose a risk to national security. National secrets or information that threatens the security of Canada never leaves or enters the laboratory.
