This development was initiated by Bruce Power, which is a Canadian commercial partnership made up of several companies.
The Ontario government said Wednesday that Bruce Power would conduct an environmental assessment to add an additional 4.8 gigawatts of capacity to its plant there.
So far, Canada’s most populous province has eight generating reactors with a capacity of about 6.2 gigawatts and provides 30% of electricity needs.

“New nuclear power plants will be key to building a clean grid for the future,” said Ontario Energy Minister Todd Smith.
The announcement comes amid growing recognition that carbon-free nuclear energy has the potential to play an important role in the global fight against climate change.
Canada is developing plans to mandate a net-zero electricity grid by 2035, and the Bruce project will be the province’s first conventional nuclear power plant in three decades.
Another utility in the region, Ontario Power Station, is involved in efforts to develop a new type of advanced reactor.
