RM.id Free people – Canada’s Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Victoria Singmin, said youth and women have an important role to play as actors in maintaining peace and stability in a country. Moreover, in ASEAN, according to him, the number of young people and women is very important so that their voices are taken into account.

“Their capacity must be taken into account if initiatives and solutions for lasting peace and stability are to be taken into account,” Singmin said during a discussion on women, peace and security organized by the Community of Foreign Policy of Indonesia (FPCI) in Jakarta, Friday (27/5).

Canada, he said, has a long history of supporting programs related to youth and women, peace and security. In particular the question of the demographic bonuses which Indonesia will face in 2045.

With regard to the demographic bonus, he acknowledged that there have been rapid advances in the field of digital and information technologies which have positioned young people as digital native who play an important role in shaping today’s and tomorrow’s society.

“And that also includes peace and security,” he said.

Canada, in collaboration with UN Women, he said, has launched an initiative on the need to empower women to create lasting peace.

FPS Agenda

Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to ASEAN, Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo, said, “Malaysia supports increasing youth and women’s leadership in the context of peace.

“Malaysia is committed to building capacity and advancing youth peace and security,” explained Nur Izzah.

One form of support that has emerged is that since 1960 Malaysia has participated in more than 38 peacekeeping operations. With a total deployment of approximately 40,000 peacekeepers.

On this occasion, the Canadian Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security (WPS), Jacqueline O’Neill, said that her visit to Jakarta aims to strengthen and further discuss WPS cooperation between Canada-Indonesia and Canada-ASEAN.

The WPS agenda focuses on increasing the meaningful participation of women and integrating a gender perspective into peace and security efforts. “The agenda contributes to the establishment of a stronger and just world peace,” O’Neill concluded. ■
