Carrying out Islamophobic action at Markham mosque, man arrested by Canadian authorities



York Regional Police officials said in a statement that a man named Sharan Karunakaran (28) was arrested in Toronto on Sunday (9/4).

Karunakaran was charged with attempting to beat worshipers at the Markham mosque while making hateful threats and insults against the Islamic religion.



Karunakaran’s court date has been set at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket and will take place on Tuesday (11/4).

Quote ArabicNews On Monday (10/4), Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng condemned the incident and called it an unacceptable hate crime in the country.

According to the Islamic Society of Markham (ISM), Karunakaran carried out this action on Thursday (6/4), and it was revealed that the man also tore the holy book of the Quran.

However, the recently released police report does not mention the suspect’s tearing of the Quran.
