Dreams of death, what is their meaning in Islam?

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Every Muslim must believe that death will approach every living soul. So, should Muslims be afraid of death? Especially when we dream of experiencing death.

Reported in About IslamThursday (05/10/2023), Lecturer and researcher Islam at the Islamic Institute in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty explained that when a person dies, he passes from this world to another. As for his soul, it did not return to his family and they felt nothing towards him.

Likewise, the deceased knows nothing about the situation of his family because he was not there, happy or tormented. As for dreams, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty said, some are true and others come from the devil.

The living can know something about the situation of the dead thanks to dream or real vision, but it is judged based on the sincerity of the person seeing the dream. Is the dream really a dream and the ability of the person interpreting the dream.

However, Sheikh Kutty advised Muslims not to be sure of what the dream says unless there is evidence to prove it. Because a living person, perhaps seeing his deceased relative in a dream, advises him to do something or tells him certain things that he considers right if they correspond to reality.

There are cases where dreams match reality and others where there is no evidence to suggest that dreams are true. And some dreams are known to be false. Therefore, Muslims are advised to pay attention to it when dealing with news, reports and stories related to the state of the dead.

What to do?

The best entertainment for believers is the Quran. He advised that if anyone has a bad dream about death, he should read or listen to the Quran as much as possible. Because the Quran can calm the heart and soul, it is as Prophet Muhammad SAW said: “When the Quran is recited melodiously, Allah will bring calm to our hearts and the angels will cover us with Divine Grace . » (HR Abu Dawud).
