Exhausted, Novak Djokovic retires from ATP Masters Toronto

Bisnis.com, SOLO – Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic announced to withdraw from the tournament ATP Masters Toronto 2023 due to burnout.

The Toronto 2023 ATP Masters committee has announced that world number two Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament.

The Serbian tennis player was exhausted and therefore could not appear at the ATP Masters in Toronto.

The announcement came a week after Serbia’s 23-time Grand Slam champion lost to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.

Djokovic’s resignation lost the four-time champion of the US Open warm-up tournament which begins on August 7.

“I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to make,” Novak Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada, released to AFP on Monday (24/7/2023).

Djokovic thanked ATP Masters Toronto director Karl Hale for understanding his decision.

He looks forward to returning to Canada and Toronto in the years to come to play in front of incredible fans.

Djokovic missed Roger Federer’s record eighth Wimbledon title last week after losing to Alcaraz.

The result also handed the All England Club their first loss on center court in 10 years.

The Spaniard’s victory also ended the chances of Djokovic, 36, sweeping this year’s Grand Slam schedule following victories at the Australian and French Opens.

The two wins took Djokovic’s major title tally to 23, the most of any player.

Hale acknowledged that the absence of Djokovic, who won the Canada Open in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2016, would be a loss for the fans.

“Of course, we’re disappointed that Novak isn’t playing the National Bank Open this year. He’s an incredible player and we know our fans are dying to see him at Sobeys Stadium,” Hale said.

Even so, Hale said the ATP Masters in Toronto was still exciting as it was joined by 41 of the best players in the world.
