International donors pledge over IDR 13 trillion for Venezuelan refugees

The International Conference of Solidarity with Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants, held in Brussels, aims to fight against the millions of immigrants who have fled the country by dangerous means towards the American borders or towards the European Union.

“Nearly $860 million was pledged at the 2023 Solidarity Conference with Venezuela. I am encouraged by this new commitment from the international community,” said European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic, published VOA News Friday (3/17).

According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), more than 7 million registered Venezuelans have fled the country, driven by extreme poverty and the political crisis in the country.

UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration have called for international support for Venezuelan refugees in that country or in other countries hosting them.

In response to the trillions of rupees in financial assistance, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, thanked Canada and the European Union for hosting the conference, which he said could alleviate the suffering of Venezuelan refugees.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro himself has opposed the conference targeting his country, saying Canada and the European Union are trying to politicize migration.
