Jakarta: iPhone 14 owners in the United States and Canada can now use the Emergency SOS function via satellite. Meanwhile, this feature will be available to iPhone 14 users in France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom starting next December.

This feature allows users to connect to emergency services even in areas without cellular network or WiFi connectivity. This condition can occur when users are out in nature or in the middle of a city after experiencing a natural disaster causing power and communication network outages.

Quote GSM ArenaThe way this feature works is that iPhone 14 users take a short questionnaire with important information, including what type of emergency they are facing, how many people need help, and other information detailed.

The response will be sent directly to emergency services that can receive SMS or one of the Apple service centers will call the service that cannot receive SMS on behalf of the iPhone 14 user.

iPhone 14 users can send and receive other messages to clarify the situation and help rescuers. Since satellites use low bandwidth, Apple has developed compression that reduces text by up to 300%.

A cell phone will take about 15 minutes to transmit a message, or longer if the sky is not clear. In addition to the questionnaire, the iPhone can also transmit the user's Medial ID, if it has been previously defined.

Medial ID works to explain users' different health concerns, so those who respond first are made aware of potential problems, such as allergies to certain medications.

Additionally, iPhone 14 users can also save up to 10 emergency contacts in iMessage. The contact will receive a transcript of the user's emergency message sent via satellite so they are aware of the situation.

The phone will guide users through the process of connecting to the satellite, which requires a number of manual actions. Apple offers a demo mode, allowing users to practice so they are ready for a real emergency situation.

Another way to enjoy satellite connectivity without the hassle is to share your location with friends and family using the new Find My feature. This feature and Emergency SOS are available on all four iPhone 14 models.

However, mobile phones must be running iOS 16.1 or later to take advantage of this satellite feature. Additionally, models imported from China, Hong Kong, and Macau do not support this feature.

This feature also cannot be used if the iPhone 14 user is at an altitude above 62 degrees latitude. Consumers who purchase an iPhone 14 before the launch of this satellite SOS service will use this service free of charge for two years. Unfortunately, Apple has not published subscription prices for this service.
