Meta made the announcement after the Canadian Parliament passed Bill C-18, the Online News Act, which requires tech giants to pay media companies for news content.
“We have repeatedly shared that, in order to comply with Bill C-18… content from news providers, including publishers and news broadcasters, will no longer be available on our platform in Canada” , according to a Meta press release reported by German media. DPA agency Friday (6/23/2023).
Meta suggests that news availability on Facebook and Instagram will end for all users in Canada before the bill comes into force.
“We want to reassure the millions of Canadians on our platform that they will still be able to connect with friends and family, grow their businesses and support their local communities,” according to the release.
The law is expected to come into force in Canada within six months.
Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said media freedom is the foundation of democracy.
“News providers across the country can now fairly negotiate compensation when their work is featured on the largest digital platforms,”
“This is about ensuring that local media companies, no matter how small, can benefit from this legislation and receive fair compensation for their work,” he said. –
