Philippines, Canada agree to explore defense cooperation

Jakarta, IDM- The Philippines and Canada signed a memorandum of understanding regarding defense cooperation some time ago. This cooperation would be the start of strengthening bilateral military relations between the two countries.

“I am pleased to learn that both sides have every intention of deepening and strengthening their ties by taking further steps in our defense relations, which will likely result in an agreement on visiting forces (Agreement on visiting forces),” Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro was quoted as saying Pna.gov.phMonday (22/1).

Teodoro did not provide an explanation for the visiting troops agreement with Canada, but the Philippines has a similar agreement with the United States. Through this agreement, thousands of American troops were allowed to enter and exit the Philippines for military training.

The memorandum will also encourage cooperation between the defense and military institutions of the two countries in the areas of military education, information exchange, peacekeeping operations and disaster response.

“Our most important asset is the mutual trust we have in each other, and because we interact with each other directly, openly and on the basis of rules, this trust is strengthened and will transcend political changes and tests of time. » added Theodoro.

Bilateral relations between the two countries have been closely linked in recent years. Canada supports the Philippines in its fight against China's position in the South China Sea and supports the 2016 decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which declared that China's claims in the South China Sea had no basis legal.
