Taiwan again detects a Chinese military fleet in the Western Pacific

The US Navy has released video of a dangerous interaction with a Chinese warship. The US military said its destroyer, the USS Chung-Hoon, along with a Canadian frigate were on a routine transit through the sensitive Taiwan Strait at the time. The Shandong aircraft carrier was seen leading the movement of a Chinese naval formation 111 km southeast of Taiwan, which entered the Western Pacific region to conduct military exercises.

Since 5:40 a.m. local time, the ministry also saw 11 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, in the air defense identification zone.

“We are monitoring the situation closely by deploying aircraft, ships and land-based missile systems to respond,” Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement. ReutersMonday (9/11/2023).

The Shandong, which began sailing in 2019, last April participated in Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, also in the Western Pacific region.

The aircraft carrier was also detected passing through the Taiwan Strait last June.

Meanwhile, a US and Canadian warship crossed the Taiwan Strait on Saturday (9/9/2023), marking their second joint mission since June. This also coincides with the meeting of leaders of the two countries at the G20 summit in India.

China has been ramping up its military activities near Taiwan for some time now, in response to what it calls “collusion” between Taiwan and the United States.
