Liberal Party MP Judy Sgro revealed that members of the House Commerce Committee are planning to visit Taiwan in October to seek economic opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The goal is not to interfere and cause problems for Taiwan or China. It’s about trade, it’s about friendship, it’s about opportunities for Canada , throughout the Asia-Pacific region,” said Sgro ReutersThursday (18/8).

According to Sgro, Canadian lawmakers have visited Taiwan twice a year in the past but stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is part of an ongoing effort on our part to ensure that the door is open to Canadian companies wherever there is a business opportunity,” he continued.

The plan is likely to draw ire from China, which has been furious since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei earlier this month.

In response to Pelosi’s visit, China restricted trade and launched massive military exercises around Taiwan, as well as imposed sanctions on Pelosi.

Beijing also imposed sanctions on a Lithuanian minister who visited Taiwan days after Pelosi’s trip.

China said another visit by US lawmakers to Taipei on Sunday was a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, relations between China and Canada have had their ups and downs. After an argument, relations between the two men calmed down when US prosecutors agreed to end the bank fraud case against Huawei’s chief financial officer (CFO), Meng Wanzhou, late last year. .
