The story of Pilu Kiska, the world's loneliest orca, dies in captivity in Canada

URBANDEPOK.COM – Kiska, the last killer whale confined to Kanda and better known as the loneliest orca in the world, has died,

” the Ontario government said Thursday and was informed of the news by the amusement park where Kiska was staying.

Kiska has been nicknamed the world's loneliest orca because he spent more than four decades of his life in captivity at Marineland.

Niagara Falls Zoo and Amusement Park, after being captured in Icelandic waters in 1979 with Keiko, the orca who starred in the film Free Willy.

Marineland said Kiska's health had deteriorated in recent weeks,

β€œThe marine mammal care team and experts did everything possible to keep Kiska comfortable and we mourn her loss,” local media quoted the park as saying.

Canadian non-profit animal rights group Animal Justice has called for an investigation into MarineLand's treatment of the orca.

This news comes four years after Canada officially banned the breeding or keeping in captivity of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

However, marine mammals like the Kiska, which are already in captivity, will remain so, according to the new law.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA),

said Kiska “spent his final years isolated in a cramped tank, swimming in endless circles or sometimes floating aimlessly.”

Kiska's life of continued isolation led the Whale Sanctuary Project to describe him as “the world's loneliest whale.”

Both animal rights groups reported that Kiska died from a bacterial infection. However, the real cause is still not confirmed.

Kiska experienced some difficulties during her time at the theme park, according to PETA.
