Trade Minister Zulhas Reveals There Has Been a Change in Indonesia’s Major Trading Partners, Here’s the Reason

Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan revealed that there was a shift among Indonesia’s trading partners from those previously dominated by Western countries. He said there were new developments in the global economy, which meant that South Asian and ASEAN countries were now contributing to Indonesia’s economic surplus.

This was expressed by Zulhas when he was a speaker at the 2023 Ministry of Defense Symposium titled “Global Geopolitics and Geostrategies and Their Influence on Indonesia in 2024”.

He revealed that this was partly influenced by the many unilateral policies of Western countries, such as the European Union, which hampered trade.

“Meanwhile, Western economic (cooperation) has stagnated. Stagnant, stagnant. What was easier for us, now our negotiations have become quite difficult, they have become hard,” he said .

He emphasized that Indonesia, as a non-aligned country, focuses more on the ideals of achieving a developed Indonesia by 2045.

“For Indonesia, everyone is friends. So whatever solution is win-win and brings mutually beneficial cooperation for the progress of the good of the country, of course we must welcome it with joy,” explained the general president of the PAN.

According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, the 10 countries contributing to the largest trade surplus in 2022 are the United States, India, Philippines, Japan, Netherlands, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Malaysia. Meanwhile, large countries like Australia, Saudi Arabia and Canada contribute to the largest trade deficit in 2022.
