Canada asks China to “persuade” Houthis to stop attacks in Red Sea

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Minister of Foreign Affairs CanadaMélanie Joly called on China to play a role in maintaining the security of the Red Sea.

He believes that to protect the trade routes through which many Chinese ships pass, Beijing must stop helping Russia evade international sanctions.

Launch CNAOn Monday (2/19/2024), in an interview, Jolly said he spoke to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for Beijing to “persuade” Houthis maintain the security of the Red Sea as a trade route.

“It’s in China’s interest [China] as an exporter,” Joly told Reuters.

Meanwhile, Yemeni militants, the Houthis, attacked ships in the Red Sea supposedly supporting Israel in the invasion of Palestine.

At the meeting held on Saturday (17/2), Jolly also emphasized that Western sanctions against Russia remain in force while the war in Ukraine continues.

As previously reported, the Houthis are known to have intensified their attacks on shipping in Red Sea. The attack impacted East-West trade routes.

Quote Reuters, Monday (05/02/2024), several shipping companies then ordered tankers to sail around southern Africa. This route has a longer distance and is therefore more expensive.

Indeed, Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen said his company experienced a larger-than-expected operational loss in the fourth quarter of 2023. This is due to falling transport volumes following attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
