Canadian national basketball team arrives in Jakarta, bringing together 7 NBA players

The Canadian national basketball players team was the first to come to Jakarta ahead of the 2023 FIBA World Cup championship. The team coached by Jordi Fernandez arrived at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang on Monday (8/21) early in the morning.

The Canadian delegation left Grenada for Indonesia aboard a chartered plane. Bringing together a group of 38 people and composed of representatives of the teams, players, coaching team and medical team.

“Ready, my friends… ready (to play the FIBA World Cup),” said Kelly Olynyk, center of the NBA club Detroit Pistons, in a written statement, Tuesday (22/8/2023).

Before coming to Indonesia, Canada played its last preparation match before the 2023 Basketball World Cup against the Dominican Republic in Granada, Spain, on Saturday (19/8). Canada lost 88-94 after Fernandez abandoned his reserves against the Dominicans, fielded by Minnesota Timberwolves bigman Karl-Anthony Towns.

For information, before the group of players took pity, Canadian coach Jordi Fernandez arrived on the first Sunday (8/21) afternoon. Other than that, so far, Canada has not announced the names of players for the final roster at the FIBA World Cup.

There are now 14 players on the team’s roster. The 12 Canadian team players who will compete will be determined before the technical meeting on August 24. On the current roster, seven players play for NBA teams. The others play for renowned European clubs.

Meanwhile, there is one player, Zach Edey, who is still an NCAA player from Purdue University. This 2.24 meter center owes his basketball talent to his mother, a Chinese immigrant.
