Canada: Canada will crack down on foreign investment in the interactive digital media sector to stop actors who could harm national security.

Canadian Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Ottawa would strengthen oversight of investments by entities owned or influenced by foreign countries.

“State-sponsored or state-influenced actors may attempt to spread disinformation and manipulate information,” Champagne said.

Canada accuses China

Without naming any specific country, Canada has repeatedly accused China and Russia of foreign interference. Both countries deny these accusations.

“From now on, foreign entities wishing to invest in this sector may have to submit to stricter conditions and for a longer period, notably in terms of creative independence, corporate governance and transparency,” he said. precise.

Ottawa will study the reach and audience of the product's content, whether the product has an online element and the level of control or influence the investor can have over the Canadian company.
